In my freshman-level course, we were asked to pick a culture and to design a pattern inspired by the culture. I chose to design a pattern based on the Polynesian culture with pattern designs inspired by traditional tattoos. We were also asked to make three variations with different color palettes, monochrome, complementary, and analogous.
